Future Developments

Sydney Water Corporation identified a minimum performance standard of the provision of full disinfection to less than 150 cfu per 100ml (although still allowing for 1.4 overflows per annum – where an overflow is defined as partially treated effluent at levels greater than 150 cfu per 100ml). Three strategies to achieve this target have been documented:

• storage of wet weather flows which have bypassed the secondary treatment process by the construction of a storage facility of 31 ML;

• disinfection of all flows from the secondary process using a chlorination plant capable of disinfecting 81 ML/day;

• storage and disinfection of all wet weather flows from the secondary treatment process by construction of a storage facility of 1.5 ML (Sydney Water Corporation 199b).
